Well-developed, Madeira is a very nice nature tourist destination that offers sumptuous landscapes, volcano hikes and even heavenly golden sand beaches. The travelers of the Evaneos community, passionate about this destination, deliver here their selection of must-see places to visit during a trip to Madeira.
Funchal is a capital city that stretches across the southern volcano of the island. Sheltered from the sea winds, enjoy the numerous alleys that wind through the different neighborhoods. You will be able to conquer the summits by borrowing the levadas, these irrigation channels which cover all the island.
Change of atmosphere and blond sandy scenery by taking the ferry (or the plane) to go to Porto Santo, a jewel of idleness but also of the quiet sweetness of life a few miles from Madeira.
Take time to contemplate the island's beautiful flowers and enjoy its mild climate all year round. Near the airport, visit Machico and especially the eastern point after Caniçal where you can enjoy beautiful walks.
For those who love splendid views, go to Encumeada which is actually a road junction located at more than 1000 m of altitude. From there, the view extends to the ocean through Pico das Cabras, Pico do Cedro... It is also possible to drive up to Pico Ruivo where the view is breathtaking. On the way down, stop at Ribeiro Frio where you can visit a trout farm.
The western part of the island is wilder and deserves more than a detour. Take the road to Seixal, then Porto Moniz where the most beautiful natural pools of the island are located. Return via Ponta do Pargo.
The archipelago is a concentrate of well-being and deserves its nickname of pearl of the Atlantic.
